Palmyra represents one of the most unique cultural heritage sites, in the whole world. It is an ancient Semitic city in present-day Homs Governorate, Syria. Archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic period, and the city was first documented in the early second millennium BC. It is 215 km (134 mi) northeast of the Syrian capital, Damascus. Palmyra had a distinctive culture, based on a local Semitic tradition, and influenced by Greece and Rome.
