Tell us about “What they don’t want you to see.” exhibition?
The show is a group exhibition with 16 artists, held in Carmarthen, United Kingdom. The artists’ participation was with paintings in the context of the title, but with different humanitarian topics, such as the Syrian reality, the Palestinian right, human trafficking and others.
What in particular drew you to your subjects?
My mother, Dr Rawan Sokar, and I presented 17 paintings, discussing humanitarian issues that touch on the Syrian reality and the repercussions of the war, such as sea travel, destruction, the anguish of loss, deprivation, poverty, and others. The subjects of the paintings stem from our personal experience as Syrians who lived through the war. We have found that drawing is translating part of the Syrian pain.
What educational background and experience do you have?
Now I am a first-year architecture student at Cardiff University. Also, I have a BTEC Diploma in Art and Design, with distinction*, from Cardiff and Vale College. In addition, I won first place in the Creative Challenge Competition for Schools of Wales CAVC in 2019 for the best artwork.
What projects do you have coming up?
We are currently holding a new group exhibition entitled “New Beginnings”, directed by artist Dorothy Morris, at the Greenspace Gallery in Carmarthen as we participate in it with new and optimistic paintings far from the topic presented in the last exhibition.
Greenspace Gallery is run by the artist Dorothy Morris
